Yankees rough up Royals

Baseball Betting Lines

07/23/2010 - Bronx, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Robinson Cano went 2-for-4 with a three-run double in the first inning, as the New York Yankees roughed up the Kansas City Royals, 7-1, in the second installment of a four-game series.

Alex Rodriguez, who hit his 599th career home run in Thursday's series opener, finished 2-for-4 with a walk Friday. While Rodriguez did not homer, Jorge Posada recorded the 1,000th RBI of his career.

Brett Gardner added two hits and two RBI for the Yankees, who have won three in a row.

A.J. Burnett (8-8) pitched five shutout innings before a lengthy rain delay forced both teams to change pitchers. Chad Gaudin allowed a run in three relief innings after the game resumed.

Royals starter Brian Bannister (7-9) gave up four runs on six hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings and took the loss, Kansas City's ninth in its last 11 games.

Bannister entered the game with a 15.07 ERA in four career starts against the Yankees, and continued to struggle in the first inning.

Gardner doubled and moved to third on an error by right fielder Alex Gordon, who was recalled from Triple-A Omaha on Friday and made his first major league start in the outfield. Gordon began the season in the majors as a third baseman, but was sent down to the minors to convert to an outfielder.

With Gardner on third, Derek Jeter grounded out before Mark Teixeira was hit by a pitch. Rodriguez came up next for his first chance at No. 600, but walked to load the bases for Cano, who stroked a double to left-center to make it 3-0.

Posada, who entered the game with 999 career runs batted in, doubled to plate Cano and reach the milestone.

Bannister settled down from there, but in the bottom of the fifth the game was interrupted by rain. Nearly an hour and a half later, the teams resumed play, and Victor Marte took over for Bannister.

Marte got the final out of the fifth, but gave up two runs in the sixth. With runners on second and third with two away, Gardner singled to left to make it a 6-0 game.

Posada's RBI single in the seventh extended the Yankees' lead, but in the eighth, consecutive doubles by Rick Ankiel and Yuniesky Betancourt provided Kansas City's only run.

Rodriguez had five plate appearances Friday. Following his first-inning walk, the third baseman singled in the third, struck out in the fifth, singled in the seventh and grounded out in the eighth.

Marlins could start season without No. 2 starter Johnson

JUPITER, Fla. -- The Foorida Marlins are preparing for the likelihood that right-hander
Josh Johnson won't be ready when the season starts April 2.

Grapefruit League action starts Wednesday, but Johnson, penciled in as the No. 2 starter, hasn't even thrown off a mound at full speed since September. He's experienced some soreness in his right forearm.

MySportsbook.com have the Marlins listed with baseball betting lines at +800 to win the NL East this season .

''You guys know the math. If he's not on the hill then he becomes an opening day roster issue,'' manager Fredi Gonzalez said Saturday. ''We're borderline now.''

Johnson, who finished 12-7 with a 3.10 ERA in 2007, was supposed to throw on flat ground Saturday. That was canceled when he woke up with pain.

He played catch on Wednesday with no pain but felt discomfort in a throwing session on Thursday. He's expected to try again Sunday.

''Like we always said from the very beginning, we're going to take it easy on him,'' Gonzalez said. ''He didn't feel right, so we shut him down. We're going to take it back to step one and see where we're at.''

Among the candidates to take Johnson's spot in the rotation are left-hander Chris George and right-handers Yusmeiro Petit and Jose Garcia.

Right-hander Sergio Mitre, who missed most of last season with arm and shoulder problems, also is behind.

With Johnson's status doubtful, Gonzalez said right-hander Ricky Nolasco will stay in the rotation and no longer will be considered a candidate for closer.
